Button Die and Cutter Set

Complete American half-ball set includes top and bottom dies, cutter, and pusher. Die pieces are nickel-plated tempered steel. Fits most American machines and some foreign machines without reducing shank diameter (please see list). Select one of the following:

Osborne #16, #18, #20, and #22 dies are manufactured to Osborne's own sizing standards, which are slightly smaller than international standard. We stock dies in these sizes with inside diameters modified to accept standard American and European backs. WB Exclusive!  We also stock unmodified dies which accept "small diameter" wire eye (#16–22) and flat backs (#22) —appearance of finished buttons is the same.

#16, #18, and #20 dies are only available as HU, but making buttons with thick or bulky materials is possible with "small diameter" wire eyes as long as the die is modified.

We offer machine shop services to customers with specific requirements. For example, we can turn die shanks to fit Rowley machines or enlarge inside openings through the shank (#30 and larger) to accommodate many craft applications, including thick hair elastics:

If you plan to use #36 Raised Rings, your new Osborne #36 die will need to be modified to accommodate the extra depth. This will not affect its function in any way and all other button backs may still be used.

NOTE: #16, #18, and #20 dies have solid shanks (no hole through the center). We can drill out a narrow hole as an option, if desired.

Be prepared to clean your new cutter as the manufacturing process may leave a film of oil. Like any fine sharpened tool, cutters will eventually become dull. We trust our own cutters to Bobby Mac the Knife. Bob McBride is a certified Master Sharpener trained to repair and sharpen round cutters —this is not a job for the guy at your local fabric store! Bob accepts cutters by mail and will return them in better-than-new condition.
