Classic sew-through shell adds the ultimate couture detail to garments and accessories. Favored by mid-century designers and popular on Chanel-style jackets. Also used on quilts a decorative accent and perfect as a non-functional button. Stocked in popular dressmaking sizes.

Finished buttons are sewn directly through the shell. Use contrasting silk twist for a dramatic appearance or matching thread for unobtrusive attachment. If your fashion fabric is thin, we suggest placing a circle of sturdier fabric inside the button back before assembly —this will strengthen functional buttons where they are sewn and prevent them from ripping out.

Available in flat as shown above (doubles as an Eyelet shell) and half ball. Flat style has a slightly "cupped" appearance when attached —check out BBC's Call the Midwife for period examples and recent ready-to-wear catalogs for modern examples!

Half ball style is commonly used for chef coats and jackets. Both styles fit standard button dies.

Pair with Sew-Thru™ backs if you plan to use these shells as intended.

NOTE: #30 is only available in half ball. If you need a #30 flat button, we suggest #28 (requires #28 button die) eyelet buttons without eyelets. Size is very similar and the finished effect will be the same.
