Patented in 1869
for use in automatic hopper feed machines, hence the name. Sometimes called a self-shank, stamped, tunnel shank, or molded button because the shank and back are one piece. Sits lower than wire eyes and commonly used when a lower profile button is desired. Very popular for custom and ready-to-wear modern apparel, as well as military and marching band uniforms. Often specified for bridal and formal attire.
Future availability of black aluminum hoppers is uncertain. Some rust-resistant sizes are currently available in black lacquer finish but this vintage stock is extremely limited. If you need black hoppers in a specific size, consider spraying plain hoppers with black engine enamel —cured enamel is safe and will have no adverse effect on any fabric or surface touching it.
#45 RR hopper backs are also stocked in "gold" (gilt) finish. Be aware that all RR hoppers are vintage stock and may have signs of rust on the inside where the plating is thinner.
We generally recommend aluminum backs be paired with aluminum shells, but have found
RR shells
often work better with thicker materials —always test!
RR hopper backs may be paired with either aluminum or RR shells (RR shells often work better with thicker fabric, even with AL hoppers). We tend to prefer
standard
shells with hopper backs, but
Low Wall
also works (and may be the only type available, depending on size).
Hopper backs meet
international standards
in all sizes.
They do not fit
unmodified Osborne, Wade, and newer C & C Metal button dies
in sizes #16, #18, #20, and #22.
Fits some
Rowley
button dies when paired with low wall shells —follow link for more information.
NOTE:
Sometimes fabric will not catch entirely inside the back —if this happens, cut fabric into larger circles (use a cutter one size larger for best results) or try using
RR shells
. You may also need to experiment with lining and interfacing materials, but that is true of all covered buttons.
Hopper backs are possibly the descendants of solid cast ("cast block") hollow-back CSA buttons. We're not saying hopper backs are authentic to the American Civil War, but if you're desperate...
Button shells (fronts) sold separately.
