Flat button dies are no longer in production so we use Standard Half Ball (HB) dies to set flat shells in our workroom. Some customers fill in or cover the concave portion of HB dies, but we use them as they are —we're reckless like that. We always recommend lining thinner fabrics but find it especially important if you're "cheating" with HB dies.

We stock materials and sizes as available. Flat shells are technically a type of Low Wall shell, but please test to be sure. Some sizes have a white finish designed with bridal fabric in mind, but suitable for other materials.

We offer a limited selection of vintage heat-treated ("plain") flat button shells for Civil War-era reproductions. Heat treating is an ancient process correct to the period, and flat shells provide an authentic 1860's profile (especially when paired with 44 Wire Eye backs). We recommend dry cleaning only for finished buttons made with heat treated components.
