Make your own specialty back! Also known as collets, flat backs are ideal for thumbtacks, pins, earring posts, hair elastics, brass fasteners (brads), binder screws, refrigerator magnets (neodymium disc inside the back works best), and pendants. Consider adding Cardboard Inserts to help secure findings. Works well with adhesive; hole provides "tooth" for improved grip. Pairs best with Standard Shells, although Flat Shells also work well..

Homemade flat back + nail + cardboard assemblies were used extensively in furniture upholstery before the advent of Pivot Tack Backs.

Flat backs are made of rust-resistant metal with matte or shiny finish, depending on availability. Hole diameters vary from 1/8" to 3/16", depending on size —we recommend "standard" small and large hole flat backs for many common applications. Please let us know if your project has specific requirements, otherwise we will ship whatever is available in that size.

If you are setting snap posts into your flat backs, be aware of the following dimensions:

5/32" ("small") holes are compatible with Baby-type #20 (20L) 1/2" snap posts: #30-Small Hole (#24 possible with narrow flange post).

3/16" ("large") holes are compatible with Durable-type #24 (24L) 5/8" snap posts: #30-Large Hole, #36, #45, #50, #60, #80 flat backs.

The smallest hole available is 1/8" ("x-small"). Flat backs with this hole have a bright nickel finish. We stock them by customer request, or if they are the only style available in a particular size.

We have flat backs that meet international standards in all sizes. We also stock "small diameter" backs in limited sizes for customers who desire a low-cost option to purchasing a standard HUX die (the smaller diameter allows more room for thicker material). "Small Diameter" #22 is the only flat back that fits unmodified #22 Osborne, Wade, and newer C & C Metal button dies .
