Classic wire eye shank won't pull or separate from button. Smaller standard U-shaped wire works well for upholstery, apparel, and crafts but might not be suitable for lightweight fabric —consider Hopper Backs, and as always... please request samples to test!

Wire eyes may be paired with either aluminum or RR shells (Standard or Low Wall) —test for best results.

Small diameter backs are very slightly smaller than International Standard. They are the only option available for #16, #18, and #20 —also stocked in #22 and #40. If you're using a standard diameter die in these sizes, you may need to "bulk out" your fabric with batting or felt and cut circles slightly larger to accommodate the extra thickness.

Small diameter backs can be a low-cost option to purchasing a standard HUX die as the smaller diameter allows more room for thicker material. Fits some Rowley button dies when paired with low wall shells —follow link for more information.

Our "new style" #22 back is the only one guaranteed to fit Handy and all other American international standard #22 dies; it is a 44 and 09 hybrid:

They do not fit #22 unmodified Osborne, Wade, and newer C & C Metal button dies.

We stock some 44 wire eyes with a shorter shank by customer request, or if they are the only style available in a particular size. They tend to be shinier than standard and small diameter backs.

You might find some shorter (older style) shanks mixed in with #16, #18, and #20 backs —especially #18. We are working to separate them... slowly. By hand. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU HAVE A PREFERENCE AND WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO ACCOMMODATE YOU.

We stock a limited selection of button backs in black oxide finish for Civil War-era reproduction apparel. Black oxide is correct to the period, and 44 wire eyes provide an authentic 1860's profile (especially when paired with flat shells). Please note that while black oxide is technically a rust-resistant finish, we suggest using care when washing finished buttons. Dry cleaning is recommended. BLACK OXIDE BUTTONS ARE IN EXTREMELY SHORT SUPPLY AND WE HAVE TEMPORARILY REMOVED THEM FROM THE WEBSITE. Please call for availability. We suggest spraying black appliance epoxy on standard buttons and putting them under a hot light for a few hours. Customers report engine enamel also works.
